U.S. DESERT RACING SERIES ROUND 1 - 02/07/10

Saturday mornings practice started out chilly and humid and about 30 minutes into the technical 15 mile loop the sky opened up and it rained. Riders working on their bikes scrambled to put up eazy-ups, tarps, push bikes into trailers and find any dry spots they could. The Kids, however, had no choice but to line up and get ready to race!

Over fifty youth quads, pee wees, kids 1 and kids 2 racers lined up wrapped in plastic and wool with parents holding umbrellas until the green flag waved. As the races went on the Kids 1, 50-65cc 0-11 years old, got the brunt of the down pour. The course turned to slop and most were without goggles but ALL finished and ALL earned their medals.

Fresh off the Overall win at Round 1 of the US Desert Racing Series held in Red Mountain just a few days prior, Factory Muscle Milk/KTM racer Dave Pearson took an amazing victory at Round 2 of the AMA/KENDA National Hare and Hound Series.

When the banner dropped it was all Dave Pearson down the virgin bomb run area. "There really weren't that many lines down the bomb but there wasn't any dust either so everyone just pinned it" said Kawasaki Racer Ryan Abatoye who dropped in right behind Pearson after the start.

In 2009 the American Motorcycle Association announced that they were selling the rights to the National Hare and Hound series which set the gears into motion for the formation of the National Hare and Hound Association. The NHHA is a committee chaired by members of the 4 California National Hare and Hound promoting Clubs in an effort to keep the series out of the hands of a single promoter scenerio. Now in 2010 there is more hype, more support,  factory backing from KTM and Husqvarna and more in store the the AMA/KENDA National Hare and Hound series then ever before!

The week started with 3 solid days of rain in the desert along with snow and wind which sent the Desert MC scrambling to get the course race ready come sunday. With 40+ years of experience putting on the National Caliber event the club was more then confident and more then ready for the challenge. So now with the most epic conditions and the deepest field of competition the banner dropped for what was to be the most anticipated season opener to date.

2009 has been the most exciting season of the US Desert Racing Series. Two major championships came right down to the final laps of the final race at the final round.  With both the Pro and Open #1 plates up for grabs it would be a stroke of luck and a a few new faces that would decide the winners fate.

The Kids 1 champion would be crowned with a lead of only 5 points. Ryan Lazar did exactly what he needed to do, finishing on the top of the podium but a flat tire at the previous round robbed him of the valuable points he needed to keep the others at bay. 9 year-old Brandon Valdez finished 2nd after a long battle with Lazar but walked away with his first #1 of his young career.  Lazar took the #2 plate and Justin Covarrubias rounded out the top 3.

In Kids 2 it was a classic battle between 4-sroke and 2-stroke with CRF 150 mounted T.J. Olsen and CR 85 mounted David Allen going back and forth the entire season. Olsen got out to an early lead with Allen on his tail but the little 85 just couldn't get the edge he needed to make the pass . They finished just as they started with Olsen in front but a hard crash and a 14th place finish at the previous round gave Allen the edge and the tittle for the season. Olsen was able to hold on to 2nd overall with Dylan Adams taking 3rd overall on the year.
