Canada's Own Cory Graffunder Triumphs in the Wintery Conditions

Round 2 of the AMA/Flexx Bars Western Checkpoint Enduro Championship

The 57th running of the Prospectors Goldrush Qualifier will be one for the history books to be sure. Not only did they make the trek from the low deserts of Red Mountain up to the High deserts of Anza, they went with a new format - the Qualifier -  and encountered weather very seldom seen at any Southern California event.

Saturday's Family Enduro started off with the threat of rain keeping the afternoons ridership very low. With just around 20 riders out enjoying the evet it was still a great day for some time keeping training. On the line were a great group of riders from Gina Rossi to the Husband/Wife Duo of Jennifer and Grant Morton all the way up to Baja and Enduro Legend Larry Roeseler.

Round 2 of the US Desert Racing Series would keep the amazing momentum of Round 1 rolling with great weather and an even better layout. The Ranch MX in the mountains of Anza California would run riders through the Cahuilla Tribal lands, through the trees and washes and host great racing as always.

The weekends events would start out Saturday with the Pee Wee Race. AJ Mrozic would continue where he left off at Round 1 taking the lead off the start and holding it all the way to the checkered flag. AJ would then sign up for his first ever Kids 1 race pitting his KTM 50 against the bigger and faster 65cc bikes and would still finish an amazing 2nd overall to Oneal MX’s Kyle Fike.

WEST CHEC WAS ABSOULTELY DOMINATED BY THE "OUT OF TOWNERS"

Round 1 of the FLEXX BARS / AMA Western Checkpoint Enduro Championship

Hosted by United MC - Lucerne Valley, Ca - 01/15/10 - www.photosbygrumpy.com

2012 marked the start of something amazing! AMA District 36, AMA District 37 and the AMA Sanctioned Arizona Offroad Motorcycle Racing Association had stretched their arms out and came together in the dusty deserts of Southern California. Not only did Northern California's District 36 riders come out in force over 50 strong, but they also came out in dominance taking the top 3 spots on the podium. Smack dab in the middle of District 37's back yard.

With 345 riders starting Round 1, the series was already off to a great start. A tougher then usual first loop would pose no threat to the out of town riders, most of which all stayed right on time... "Actually, our first loops are much tougher" said D36's Ryan Boardman "its just.. ya know. Different. More Trees, less rocks, just different." Local Mini Desert Champion Rafa Orendian would finish the entire first loop only dropping 2 points aboard his 3 Brothers KTM 85 and would take home the 1 loop overall win for the second time in his young career.

The Second loop would be the haymaker for the day taking riders along some of the tightest ridges, through the narrowest rocks, weaving through the now famous "Mr. Toads Wylde Ride" and finishing up a huge ledged uphill. This is where most riders would lose the brunt of their time. Reigning Enduro Champion Ryan Kudla aboard his brand new 3 Brother KTM 300 XC-W would have his usual Gremlins at round 1. "Every year its something. I run out of gas, I lose my magnet, I get 'lost'... this year was no different" said Kudla "Not only did my Odo just die at the 2.9 marker I also lost my brakes the entire 2nd loop! I just keyed off my brother the whole time, but his odo broke on the first loop to so he was keying off a rider on the minute ahead of him!" Kudla would still do will finishing 9th overall on the day, normally a rough start but one that he should be used to by now.
